A STUDY OF THE SELF-RATING DEPRESSION SCALE (SDS) ON PSYCHIATRIC OUT-CLNIC PATIENTS

Abstract
Author performed the Self-Rating Depression Scale of W.W.K. Zung on 1113 normal subjects and 448 psychiatric out-clinic patients from March
1, 1976 to July 31, 1976.
And author classified the test subjects into sexes four age groups, ie., under 19, 20 to 39, 40 to 64, and over 65 years, and also different psych¡©iatric diagnoses.
Results were made as follows:
1. The Depressive score was not different among age groups and also sex groups.
2. In comparison of rank order of the items of the Self-Rating Depression Scale, "Decreased lib¡©ido" was the highest rank order among normal su¡©bjects. And "Confusion" was the highest rank order among total psychiatric out-clinic patients. However "Suicidal rumination" was the lowest rank. order in all of the tested groups.
3. Depressive score was significantly higher in the group of depressive neurosis than that of in the group of anxiety neursis.
4. In cemparison of anxiety neurosis, depressive neurosis and normal subjects, the score of depres¡©sion was the significantly high in the female group aged 40 to 65 of depressive neurosis.
5. In involutional melancholia, somatic sympt¡©oms tended to be in higher rank order and Psy¡©chological symptoms in lower rank order. While in all other groups psychological symptoms tended to be in higher rank order and somatic symptoms in lower rank order.
